DIY Installation
Please note: - Fixings are inside your new key safe
How easy is it to install a key safe?
All of our key safes can be easily installed by a competent DIY’er.
Every key safe comes complete with a suitable fitting kit and a detailed user guide which explains how to mount the device onto a masonry surface correctly.
If you’d rather leave the installation to us, we offer an installation service that covers the majority of the UK at an additional cost.
Can I install into render?
Our ark Tamo™ and ark Tamo Pro Maximum Security Key Safes are suitable for installation into render when using the XL Security Screws. Render should be smooth.
Our C500 & P500 police preferred key safes are tested onto brick and concrete only.
*Please note we do not recommend installing onto pebble dash substrate.
ark Tamo comes with Standard Security Screws (self-tapping masonry screws). If you are fitting ark Tamo to a rendered wall, you will need our XL Security Screws and Fitting Pack for XL Security Screws.
ark Tamo Pro comes with both Standard Security Screws and XL Security Screws & Wall Plugs.
Can I install my C500 or P500 key safe in surfaces other than brick or concrete?
The C500 and P500 key safes have been tested on standard house brick and concrete only. To maintain the LPS certificate and police preferred accreditation, key safes must be installed into brick or concrete using the supplied fixings.
If the P500 or C500 key safes are installed into another substrate, then the LPS accreditation is voided. The product is not necessarily less secure. However, the devices have not been tested on other materials.
If you wish to install a key safe into a different surface, then you will need to assess this risk and ensure the product is firmly fixed to the wall. The screws provided are designed for brick and concrete and potentially might not be able to cut their thread to secure a reliable enough grip if installed into another substrate. We are unable to recommend alternative fixings.
Furthermore, we recommend that you contact your property insurance company to advise them you have a police accredited key safe. This is to guarantee your policy is still intact.
*Please note that key safes are to be installed a minimum of 6 inches away from any edge of the wall.
Can the fitting screws be re-used?
Unfortunately, the fitting screws can’t be re-used. The four masonry screws supplied with our police preferred key safes cut their thread in the substrate on installation. The thread, therefore, would weaken on every install, making the key safe less secure.
If you’d like to move your key safe, please use new fixings to ensure maximum adherence to the wall.
Please ensure you drill new holes for every installation. Using existing holes can weaken the quality of the installation and may result in a less secure fit.
If you are reinstalling in a previously used area and are concerned about the old holes being visible, you can adjust the position of the key safe slightly so that the new holes are offset from the originals, while the key safe itself covers the old holes.
Replacement Fitting Screws can be purchased via our website. Please note there is a small postage fee on orders under £30 in value.
What tools do I need to install a key safe?
All of our key safes come complete with a detailed user guide which explains how to correctly mount them onto a masonry surface. DO NOT use the key safe as a template to avoid getting brick dust inside it which could hamper the mechanism, use the template provided.
To install your police preferred key safe you will need the following items:
Power Drill
Pencil/Pen

Where do I obtain a Torx head screwdriver for installing a police preferred key safe?
You can find these tools at DIY or hardware stores. The correct size Torx head screwdriver bit (Torx T30) are also available direct from The Key Safe Company website. Alternatively, you may choose to use a Torx head screwdriver bit which fits into an interchangeable screwdriver.
Can I get replacement fitting screws?
Replacement fitting screws can be purchased directly from our The Key Safe Company website.
Where should I install my key safe?
We recommend that all key safes are installed discretely to minimise the risk of attracting attention. If necessary, the product can be placed more noticeably, but you will need to assess the risk yourself.
Ideally, it should be in a position that provides light for the user and allows ease of access to open the key safe and also for code management. Also consider the height of installation, can it be easily reached by all users? Can you see inside the key safe once it is installed to be able to change the code?
Please note that key safes are to be installed a minimum of 6 inches away from any edge of wall.
Do I have to fit a key safe by my front door?
It is a common misconception that a key safe generally stores a front door key, and therefore must be installed next to the front door.
Our key safes do not require a power supply, so can be positioned anywhere. This includes inside meter boxes, or at the rear of the property.
Ideally, it should be in a position of easy access to the user which you may decide is near the front door. As our police preferred key safes have a recognised security rating which is comparable to a front door, you are not compromising your security by installing it here.
